Karen Schneider

My daughter and I first came to Hawaii in 1994 to visit close friends. When the plane landed in the lava fields in Kona I knew I was HOME. The minute I descended the stairs and smelled the plumeria-scented air the feeling deepened. Within half an hour we were swimming with the honu at Kahalu Beach. The next few days we traveled the island swinging on vines like Tarzan and Cheetah in Kohala, swimming in a waterfall fed pool at Kolekole Beach park, hiking to Akaka Falls and viewing Rainbow Falls, people-watching in downtown Pahoa, sipping cocoa by the fireplace at the Volcano Lodge, jumping into a lava opening into the ocean at South Point and enjoying chili-topped with mac nuts at the Punuluu Bakery in Naalehu. My favorite spots are Pu’uhonua o Honaunau (City of Refuge), and “Two Step” where we enjoy snorkeling.

I returned to the mainland but continued to come back home to the island every 6 months until my husband and I finally joined our daughter on the Big Island in 2003. We lived on the Kona side for a year but then relocated to Volcano where we built a home for my daughter and her husband. My mentor, a realtor, asked me to work for her as an assistant and finally suggested I get my license. Having found my place and home in Hawaii I now have the joy of helping others find theirs.

This, to me, is what ALOHA means -" Alo" means "to share"; "oha" means "to show affection or friendship", and "hā" means "life, breath". I love sharing my love of the islands and helping others find their place here as they discover the true meaning of Aloha.
